Pursuing Truth in a World Full of Noise

Ken F. Miller

It is the same question that has been agonizing people in every generation: What is truth?

Our so-called “authorities” and “experts” in every area of life, religious, cultural, political and personal, have managed to confuse a whole world of people as to what the real definition of what truth is, religiously speaking. However, to the believers of Jesus, there is a solution, God’s Word. Truth is more than an idea, truth is a person, Jesus, and His Doctrine.

31  Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32  And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:31-32 (KJV)

The process of embracing spiritual truth begins by accepting Christ’s doctrine. These words and teachings of Jesus Christ aren’t optional or symbolic. They form the basis of Christian life and eternal salvation on His terms not ours. As soon as a believer starts forming his or her faith on something other than this doctrine they will realize, at their judgement (which will be too late) that they have believed and followed a false doctrine.

Why Jesus’ Teaching Still Matters Today

In John 14:6, Jesus put it simply when he said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. He said, No man or woman can come to the Father, but through Me.” This was not a relieving statement, it was a statement of exclusivity. We must accept what Jesus preached and live accordingly to live a life pleasing to God.

Jesus came to offer salvation, He also made it a way of life. The contents of his messages concerned all the conditions of life that touched on love, mercy, judgment, repentance, forgiveness, humility, obedience and eternal life.

He was not obscure and idealistic; His teaching was concrete, critical and brimming with divine profundity. Accepting Christ’s doctrine is accepting and complying to live a lifestyle that alters the heart, remodels the brain, and makes the soul whole.

A Doctrine That Divides and Unites

The doctrine of Christ has always been a dividing line. Even in the ministry of Jesus, a great number of followers (not the original 12) left when He started teaching in a way that was tough to understand (John 6:41-71). By his words he interrupted their routine, he shook up their understanding of God, he brought the human heart under the fire of its own arrogance and insurrection, however, he who believed in His words and developed faith attained salvation.

The same thing happens today, most people are quick to follow the love and mercy of God, but are slow, even worse, never follow what Christ commands or warns us about. Being a disciple, in the true sense, is to believe what Jesus says, even when it goes against the culture or inclination. Christ’s doctrine expects us to surrender, not partially, but completely to His grace. The rich young ruler refused to do this and went away sad. Matthew 19:16-22

It does not imply being afraid or strict. Quite the opposite, we are only free when we submit to the Truth of Christ. He invites us to enter into a relationship of trust, love and truth through his blood.

The Cost and Reward

Jesus did not promise that being His follower was going to be an easy task, yes, in reality he said the reverse: “whosoever will come after me, must deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Believing in the teaching of Christ is to give up on their own ambitions and self-interests, reconsidering that way which they treat others and readiness to lose their status in this world in order to gain eternal reward.

But the cost is worth it. Every command Jesus gave is rooted in love, His doctrine is not passive in nature but is active through our believing faith. Thru His Word we not only receive teaching, but healing. He teaches us how to forgive since He understands that bitterness kills us. To do the work of others He says, is to serve in the name of others, because self-centeredness is not included in the doctrine of Christ.

Complying with the doctrine of Christ not only helps us to maintain our salvation but also solidifies it at our death.

How Do We Accept His Doctrine?

  1. Start with Scripture
The teachings are from Jesus and are contained in the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (Gospel of Christ). Begin by reading His words slowly and carefully. Ask yourself: “What is Jesus really saying here? Am I living this out?”
  2. Pray for Understanding
The Holy Spirit is imparted to guide us in truth knowing (John 16:13). Pray every day and ask God to open your heart and see His Word clearly and to convict you on where you need change.
  3. Be Willing to Unlearn
Many of us come to faith with preconceived ideas. Some are cultural, others are based on tradition or upbringing. Accepting Christ’s doctrine will mean letting go of ideologies and indoctrinations that don’t align with His Word.
  4. Apply It, Don’t Just Admire It
You can go ahead and adore Jesus’ wisdom and philanthropy. But being a follower of Christ means, putting His teachings in action in real life. Whether it be loving an enemy, forgiving a wound inflicted on us, or walking in humility, His doctrine must go beyond carnal knowledge it must go into our character.
  5. Remain Teachable
Accepting Christ’s doctrine is not a one-time event, it’s a lifelong process. Even as we become more mature in our faith, we will find ourselves learning different areas that Jesus is teaching us, correct us, and leading us.

Stay Rooted, Stay Growing

The Word of God is the solid rock that He wants us to build our life on, not the half-truths/lies which are forever changing in today’s world. Accepting Christ’s doctrine provides us with the anchor of stability as well as a guide in life. To the greater extent, as we fill our lives with His teaching, the more we are drawn to His character in a watching world.

We did not get a “call” to follow Jesus in our way. We are called to follow Him on His terms. And those terms are clearly laid out in His doctrine, commanding us to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

A Deeper Dive Is Coming

For believers seeking to understand these truths more deeply, Ken F. Miller’s upcoming book, Understanding the Doctrine of Christ, offers a step-by-step journey into the biblical foundation for spiritual maturity. Slated for release in August 2025, the book explores how accepting Christ’s doctrine isn’t just about belief, it’s about becoming the kind of person who lives out His words every day.
