Rooting Your Faith on a Solid Foundation

Ken F. Miller

In the modern world that is spiritually pluralistic, it is normal to find people pursuing teachings that are good to the ears but do not have a solid biblical base. Many people mean well when they come to services, devotionals and Christian groups but never stop to ask, “am I getting the “Big Picture” of what God wants me to see and follow?

1  I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
3  For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

4  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. 2 Timothy 4:1-4 (KJV)

Comprehending Jesus’ instruction and basis of teaching is critical for the believer because  it is the core in all aspects of the Christian’s life, including salvation and spiritual growth, daily living and assurance of eternal living. At the core of that walk is something many have heard about but few deeply study: understanding the Doctrine of Christ.

As I said in my book, Understanding the Doctrine of Christ, according to Hebrews 5”12-14 & Hebrews 6:1-20

“The Doctrine of Christ” is the “heart and soul” of Christianity, it tells us the “what and why” of what we must do for us to have Eternal Life.

“The Gospel of Christ” is the heart and soul of the “who, what, when and where” of how we are to teach the Word of God to an unsaved world (concerning Salvation).

BOTH share the same teachings and message but are different in their presentation and purpose. Be very careful here and follow what I am saying. There is no way we can combine both into one doctrine because of their purpose.

Why Doctrine Matters More Than Ever

The term “doctrine” is unfavorable among some people because they just brandish the attitude that it is dry, divisive, and only the stereotyped scholars hold such concepts. However, in actual sense, doctrine is just teaching a specific thought, ideology, creed, or life style according to the dictionary. True Christianity is based on the inspired teachings of God, without them, faith would be superficial, sentimental and easily favorable to the culture or convenience. Lord knows mankind is doing enough of this now.

In John 7:16 Jesus said, “my doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me”. This is reason enough why all Christians should believe everything He taught. A spiritual person is not enough, we are expected to be anchored in the truth. And that truth begins with understanding the Doctrine of Christ as revealed in Scripture. My book, due out in August 2025, dives deeply into this subject, using scripture to explain the doctrine.

The early church started out O.K. in God’s doctrine at Pentecost but later old Jewish traditions came in and made a big mess that we are still dealing with today.  (Commonly called denominationalism.) The Bible states, in acts 2:42 that, the believers continued steadfastly in the doctrine of the apostles, who were teaching the Doctrine of Christ.

The Danger of Selective Belief

In contemporary Christianity it obvious that man has twisted the Word of God in that, they emphasize some aspects of the life of Jesus, the miracles of Jesus, the love of Jesus, the compassion of Jesus, and have made minimum reference to the significant parts of His message, even to a point of overlooking and leaving them out. We must understand that Christ did not want us to follow only some of his teachings, He called us to lead a life in accordance to all of them.

In 2 John 1:9 the Scripture says, “Whoever does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God”. It is a strong statement. It tells us that understanding the Doctrine of Christ isn’t just a matter of preference, it’s a matter of spiritual life or death. To abide in Christ is to live, we either take it all as to what He preached in his teaching: about salvation, repentance, faith, holiness, baptism, the Holy Spirit and so on or we reject it, there is no in between.

30  He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. Matthew 12:30 (KJV)

What the Doctrine of Christ Includes

When people talk about understanding the Doctrine of Christ, they often lessen it to a hardly any of moral teachings. But the doctrine of Christ is much more detailed. It includes:

  1. The repentance appeal: The repentance of sin is a very fundamental aspect to the kingdom of God (Luke 13:3).
  2. Water baptism in His name: The baptism in the name of Jesus was practiced by the apostles as commanded by Him (Acts 2:38; Matthew 28:19).
  3. The infilling of the Holy Spirit:

John 14:15-17 (KJV)

                   15  If ye love me, keep my commandments.
                        16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another

                Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
                        17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive,

                because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know

                him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

  1. To live a holy perfected special life: Not as a burden of law, but to re-action to the influence and the power of God (John 15:10; 1 Peter 1:15- 16).
  2. Trusting in Him, as the sole means to the Father: not as among a variety of means, the means alone by which to pass into the kingdom of God (John 14:6).

All these teachings are interrelated to one another and substantiated in the New Testament. To grasp one part is to begin seeing the whole. But to reject or ignore any piece is to miss the fullness of what Christ came to offer.

How to Start Growing in the Doctrine of Christ

For those desiring to go deeper, here are a few practical steps to begin:

  • Begin at the Gospels: Study the sayings of Christ. Pay attention to what He said as well as what He did, particularly regarding salvation, discipleship and obedience.
  • Read the book of Acts: This book demonstrates how His doctrine was used by the apostles in the real life. It is the life connection between the teaching of Jesus and the practice of the early church.
  • Comparison should be Scripture with Scripture: There is consistency in the teachings of Christ in the Gospels to epistles.
  • Be willing to unlearn and learn: Unlearn and relearn to submit to what Scripture says. It will take you into the truth, it may contradict and overthrow long abiding indoctrinations, but it will move you toward the truth.
  • Seek revelation of God: it is not the intellect alone which gives understanding, it will require the guidance of the Holy Spirit to be the guide in your study and open your eyes to truth.

Truth That Transforms

Understanding the Doctrine of Christ is not about collecting theological information, it’s about transformation. When His words are planted in your heart, they will alter your thinking, your living pattern and you will relate to others differently. Not only is this doctrine true; it is life giving, soul saving, and eternity shaping.

In this age of religious short cuts and diluted Gospel, returning to the teachings of Jesus is the strongest decision that any Christian can ever make. Our faith will not be able to stand the test of the time without the rock that is His doctrine and on which we must build.
