Seeking Truth in a World of Confusion

Therefore, in an era when opinions tend to substitute the facts and, on the other hand, feelings tend to prevail over faith, the necessity of the biblical clarity is more urgent than ever. As Christians, truth is not a concept, it is a standard on how we should live, believe as well as make our decisions. What will convince us that we are reading Scripture right? The answer lies in a biblical command that many overlook rightly dividing the Word of truth.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12

15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

The apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to be a true worker who is not ashamed, an accurate interpreter, and even applicator of the Word of God. All believers in today’s society are expected to diligently read the Scriptures and ascertain truth in comparison to false doctrine.

Significance of Interpretation of Sound

The word of God is alive, powerful and it is undying. However, sincere believers can easily get confused or in doctrinal error without appropriate knowledge. The wrong application of scripture has been at the core of more divisions, wrong teachings, and erroneous practices in the history of churches worldwide.

That’s why rightly dividing the Word of truth is not just for pastors or theologians, it’s for everyone who claims to be a disciple of Christ. All Christians must have the ability to interpret the Scripture with precision using all the Scripture in context, with the union of the whole counsel of God and under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Look at it this way, every sentence in this blog is a “snapshot” of the complete blog. Try it yourself, pick out just one sentence, now, from that sentence only explain this blog. It is literally impossible to do. Yet, humans think they can, look at how we have made thousands of denominations, showing just how foolish we are. Bottom line, not one of these denomination’s doctrine will lead us to eternal salvation, only the Word of God.

What Is Right-invoke Divine?

To “cut straight” in a true manner is the meaning of the phrase “rightly dividing”. A craftsman refers to cutting a path or cut a piece of material. Spiritually, it means that we must accept the scripture for what it is saying, because God intended it this way, not our way.

So, to “rightly divide the Word” acceptably, we should:

  • Read Scripture in context, reading in context means to see that Scripture is read with the historical, cultural and grammatical background of a passage in mind to avoid the possibility of inaccurate interpretation.
  • Scripture vs. Scripture, the Bible is the inspired Word of God and God cannot lie, therefore, scriptures cannot contradict each other. With the help of cross-referencing passages and a good Biblical Concordance we can evaluate the continuity of the message of God and prevent “cherry-picking” verses to make a personal stand.
  • Learn the difference between covenants and doctrines.
  • Obey the leading of the Spirit, The Holy Spirit guides us into all the truth. Praying when studying makes sure we do not rely on our own understanding but the understanding of God.

Errors in Handling the Scripture

There are numerous pitfalls involved when individuals do not correctly understand the Word of truth. Some of them are as follows:

  • Mis-quoting a verse or leaving off the rest of the passage, using the verse out of context, deliberately mis-reading a verse that totally leads to false conclusions.
  • Superimposing his/her own meaning on the Scripture, when God addresses us through His Word, we need to maintain the original meaning and then accept this meaning personally.
  • It is neglecting the balance of Scripture, over-emphasizing one aspect of truth (e.g. “grace”) at the expense of another (e.g. “holiness”), and thereby, producing an imbalanced and incomplete gospel.
  • If we look at “The Big Picture” of what the scriptures are saying none of the above would happen.

Benefits of Rightly Dividing the Word

When believers commit to rightly dividing the Word of truth, several powerful things begin to happen:

  • A deeper spiritual discernment, you will start identifying bad teaching and see contradiction within the message that may sound good but not based on the Scriptures.
  • Greater personal change, the better you apply the Word of God, the more it will open your heart to God’s love.
  • It will strengthen oneness in the body and mind when scripture is applied faithfully and plainly, it is a unifying instead of a divisible force.
  • Assurance of teaching and sharing, you will have the assurance of being able to talk about your faith with confidence because you know that what you are saying is what God intended to be said through you.

This is not discipline of intellectual pride, it is a discipline of spiritual responsibility to God, it is the Word of God, we have no authority or right to change it, it was given to us by God Himself and in a certain viewpoint that will not be changed by us or by God.

How To Start Developing This Practice

If you are asking yourself how you would start, here are some of the steps that will guide you in this direction:

  1. Make it a habit to study the bible, and do not depend on sermons and devotions. Make it a point to devote time daily to Bible reading and Bible study.
  2. Be dependable, Biblical Commentaries, Bible dictionaries, tools in original languages, and guides in viewing it in history may enhance your knowledge.
  3. Ask questions, do not go out exploring: Who wrote this? To whom were they talking? What do these teach me concerning God?
  4. Just be very humble and open to teaching, none of us is right all the time therefore, “lean not on your understanding”.
  5. And pray to have wisdom, the same Spirit that breathed the Word will help you to know what it is he is saying. When you read your Bible ask God to shed some light and understanding.
