The Fullness of Christ’s Message

29 July 2025

Ken F. Miller

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. John 1:1-4 (KJV)

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good

 works. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)

For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:

And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18-19 (KJV)

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13 – 14 (KJV)

The world is now being occupied by many Christian people who want to serve God and are desperate and fervent about salvation, worship, and grace, yet they are confused by so many different denominational doctrines that have taken the Doctrine of God and twisted it into what they want it to say. The distinction between the Gospel of Christ and Doctrine of Christ is not simply a matter of language, it’s a matter of building a foundation in the proper order for us to have eternal salvation.

Understanding both is essential, living in both gives salvation. The Gospel tells us what must be done for us to be saved. Doctrine teaches us how to live in order to maintain this salvation. These two do not find any conflict, they are one coin in two sides, man’s doctrines makes them conflict in order to have their faith. When either one is stressed or the other ignored, one usually comes up with superficial or even incomplete faith.

The Gospel: Entry into the Kingdom

“The Good News” is, the Gospel of Christ gives us the testimony of salvation in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. In 1Corinthians 15:11-14, Paul explained that it (Doctrine of Christ)is the central message that he and the other apostles have preached and through it we can have salvation. In the Gospel, we are told that we all lost our way in sin but it is through God’s redemptive grace, at the cost of Jesus that will happen. Through His sacrifice, we are able to have eternal life.

What then comes after the door to salvation has been opened?

Doctrine: The Life We’re Called to Live

This is where the Gospel of Christ vs Doctrine of Christ distinction becomes critical. The Gospel leads us to Christ for salvation. The Doctrine teaches us to follow Him daily to move into perfection in Him.

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance

From dead works, and of faith toward God,

Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

And this will we do, if God permit. Hebrews 6:1-3 (KJV)

In 2 John 1:9 we have a high claim: Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. This shows us that the doctrine of Christ isn’t optional or secondary, it is the very framework for abiding in Him.

Why the Distinction Matters

Contemporary Christianity has the unfortunate propensity of stopping at the Gospel, and never advancing into discipleship. Most people are even happy that they are saved but not changed. This brings the culture of spiritual babies, individuals who profess Jesus but fail to appreciate what He has to say.

12  For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13  For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14  But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:12-14 (KJV)

The Gospel that is preached without doctrine can result in experiences that do not make any change. An absence of the Gospel in teaching doctrine can result in legalism or soulless religion. But as the two are combined together, believers get redeemed and rooted.

Common Misunderstandings

There are some misrepresentations about the Gospel and doctrine as follows:

  • “Doctrine has no value to my life as long as I believe the Gospel.” In scripture we are told the opposite.

15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 1 Peter 3:15 (KJV)

  • “Doctrine separates, but gospel unites.”

9  But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

10  For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
11  And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:
12  That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Hebrews 6:9-12 (KJV)

  • “Doctrine is for theologians, not for everyday Christians.” The writer of Hebrews was not talking to theologians but to everyday people just you and me, what grounds is this statement based on?

Walking in Both Truths

If we want to live in the fullness of Christ’s purpose, we must embrace both the Gospel and His doctrine. The Gospel brings us into the kingdom. The doctrine teaches us how to live as kingdom citizens.

The apostles understood this clearly. In the book of Acts we see that they did not only preach the crucified Christ, but they also taught, instructed, corrected and planted churches in the doctrine they had been taught by Jesus.

Paul implored Timothy saying, “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them; but whereunto thou hast already attained, even unto these ye do well” (1 Timothy 4:16). Why? Because doing so would “save both thyself and them that hear thee.”

The difference between the Gospel of Christ vs Doctrine of Christ is not a division, it’s a progression. One is the entrance, the other is the journey.

Pursuing Balance and Depth

Any spiritual life which is constructed on Gospel is carved up with doctrine and consummated by the Holy Spirit is a healthy spiritual life. When we are truly given both, we will achieve the transformation that Jesus had in mind, not mere belief in the moment, but lifetime discipleship.
